Glastonbury Abbey was once one of the largest and most important abbeys in the UK. It fell to the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII in the 16th Century as so many did. The Abbeys many treasures were lost, the stone recycled by locals for building, and the site fell into ruin. But it was purchased in the early 20th Century and then preserved and is now a lovely site with the ruins, extensive grounds, two ponds, a nature area, and the intact Abbot's Kitchen.
There are many legends about the Abbey. It is reputed to be the site of the first Christian church in England. King Arthur and Queen Guinevere are also supposed to have been buried there. A grave was discovered in the 12th Century puported to be theirs and a marker shows the spot now. For lots more information see the Abbey's web site at
