The White Spring

The white spring is in Wellhouse Lane, at the foot of the Tor and near the Chalice Well Gardens. It was probably once honoured as a sacred spring, but in the 19th Century a reservoir was built there, and the spring was lost. For a while in the late 80's and again in the 90's there was a cafe and little shop there, but they both closed and the building seemed derelict for a while. I felt it to have a slightly bad atmosphere during that time.

But on my most recent visit to Glastonbury on saturday 17th March 2007, I had a pleasant surprise. The old building has been opened up again, the spring now flows through a rock lined opening, and the whole place seems like a shrine, a special place again. I do hope it is going to stay that way.

As usual click on thumbnail and the photo will open in a new sized to fit window.
